This sketch has always made me laugh - even more so now.

Misery - not quite the "trip" that I was hoping for
Remember that James Caan/Kathy Bates film?
Well I've just broken my ankle. I was walking up three steps and missed my footing. It was a bit more than just a trip, my left foot was pointing at right angles to my right one. Rich Hall was brill and called 999 straight away, and I'm now in NDH awaiting surgery tomorrow.
I've not put any weight on it, which is a relief, as both major bones in my lower leg are broken in several places.
Bring on the morphine! Photos to follow in due course. In the words of Unlucky Alf - "Ooooh Bugger!"
In the meantime, bring on the morphine...
Update:
Accident was ca 1030 on Thursday. Straight to NDH for X-Rays and CT Scan.
Operation 0930 Friday. Didn't come round till about 1500. Spent much of the rest of the day drifting in and out of consciousness.
Not a great night Fri - Sat... Gradually imcreased painkillers, but probably did it too late. On saline drip due to dehydration.
Sat morning, dull ache which increased till lunchtime, when I needed another 40 winks, missing lunch, which I really couldn't face. Finally managed a wee around 0800, 23 hours after my last one. Roll on visiting time as I'm all scrubbed up!
Sunday - consultant suggests that they should keep me in until Tuesday, when the swelling has subsided enough to replace the cast. Next cast change will then be in a fortnight.
Monday: Consultant suggests cast change today. No weight bearing for 6 weeks. This is now delayed until 1030 Tue, after which I should be allowed home.
Tuesday: Cast changed @ 10:30, and home by 13:30.

I've been Press-Ganged!
See http://kathleenandmay.blogspot.com/ for details....
....and, having crossed the river, we are now back on the mudberth (16/10/08). For a multitude of reasons the trip didn't take place.

Fancy that ...
Yesterday, whilst training with Cadets at NDYC, Jake lost his cap.
Today, he capsized, in a different type of boat. On re-righting the boat, his cap was scooped up too.
What are the chances of that happening?

Go Ape, Haldon Forest
In quite atrocious weather, Jake and I went on the course at Go Ape in Haldon Forest, near Exeter. We were both soaked through to the skin, and the wind was wild, but we had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
Despite all this, Jake did brilliantly and I'm really proud of what he achieved, especially as he didn't weigh enough to complete the death slide, and ended up stopping well short of the end zone, and had to be recovered twice!
A clip of Jake trying to get some heat in his hands, so that he could open the carabiner.
Jake on the training slide,
and on the bigger death slide.
Thom on the Tarzan swing,
and on the aerial walkway.
Photos here.
All washed down by a pint and a great meal at the Nobody Inn, Doddiscombsleigh, which hasn't changed in the 25 years since I was last there. Another fine Devon Inn.
